Why most OC Test preparation keeps your child busy, not improving

OC Test practice only works when each session builds on the last. Booklets and online packages give every child the same questions in the same order. Your child keeps practising what they already know and has no one to ask when they're stuck.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NSW OC Test and why take it?

The Opportunity Class Placement Test is a test designed to evaluate a Year 4 student's abilities in the following categories: reading, mathematical reasoning and thinking skills. The test is designed to qualify students for opportunity classes in Years 5 and 6, which group high-potential students together for an optimal learning pace.

Is the NSW OC Test done online?

Yes. The NSW OC Test is computer-based, sat across three timed papers with a break between them.

That is why online practice rehearses the exam in a way a booklet cannot: reading a passage by scrolling, choosing answers with a mouse, and working against an on-screen clock. PassPapers runs entirely online on a replica of that interface, so exam day is not the first time your child sits the test on a computer.

Where can I find NSW OC Test past papers?

The NSW Department of Education publishes official sample material for the Opportunity Class Placement Test on its own site, and that is the right place to start. Beyond it there is no public archive of real exams: anything else sold to you as an OC Test past paper is third-party practice material written to match the format, not a released test.

That is worth knowing before you pay for a set. What decides whether a paper helps is not the label on it, but whether it matches the current computer-based format and tells you something once your child has finished. PassPapers mock exams run in a replica of the real interface, mark every section, and turn the questions your child got wrong into revision quizzes aimed at exactly those weak areas.

How should my child prepare for the NSW OC Test?

OC Test preparation works best in four stages: learn the concepts, practise them topic by topic, sit full mock exams under timed conditions, then go back over the questions that went wrong. Most families do the first three and skip the fourth, which is the one that moves marks.

How much of that happens at home, with a tutor, or on a platform depends on your family and your budget.

My child is in Year 2. Is it too early to start?

No. Year 2 is a popular time to start, because nothing is urgent yet. A Year 2 student is not doing intensive exam prep. They are meeting the question types, building reading speed, and getting used to answering on a computer, so Year 3 and 4 are spent sharpening rather than catching up.

PassPapers is self-paced, so a Year 2 student works through the tutorials and short topic quizzes at whatever speed suits them. The analytics show you which areas are developing and which need attention long before the real test.

How much practice should my child do each week?

There is no single right answer, and the families who get the most out of it are the ones who pick a routine they can stick to long term. Some do 30 to 40 minute sessions, 5 to 7 days a week. Others do 1 to 2 hours, 3 or 4 times a week. Both work. What matters is that the practice is spread out and consistent, so pick whichever shape fits your week and your child's attention span.

The one routine we would not recommend is a single long session a week, especially a very long one. Consistent practice is what makes the learning stick, and a once-a-week routine is also the easiest one to miss. Keeping it going is the real challenge, which is why motivation and engagement are built into PassPapers, and why each session is aimed at your child's weak areas.

What makes PassPapers different from other online OC Test platforms?

Most online OC Test platforms sell your child questions and stop there.
While other OC practice tests and OC Test past papers only provide mock exams, there are four components to PassPapers: Tutorial, Practice, Mock Exams, and Revision. These four components build up the essentials of preparing for the OC Test and give your child the academic edge.

PassPapers allows students to identify their individual strengths and weaknesses through personalised progress tracking and tailor made revision quizzes. Through our platform, students will improve their test-taking ability and have confidence when tackling the official OC Test.

PassPapers is also built to be fun. Study streaks, rewards and learning games keep your child coming back to practise, and steady practice is what turns gaps into marks.

Another key difference is the writers of the questions at PassPapers: all the questions are written by experts and professionals and are checked to ensure they are of the highest quality.

What's the difference between the OC platform and the Selective platform?

The two are built the same way, so a family moving from one to the other will find it familiar. What changes is what is inside:

Question content. Every question is written for the OC Test: Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills, in the OC Test's own question types. There is no writing paper.
Difficulty. Questions are pitched at the OC Test, which students sit in Year 4, rather than at the Selective Test.
Motivation. OC students are younger, so the OC platform puts a larger focus on keeping them motivated, with study streaks, unlockable rewards and learning games.

My child is strong in one subject but behind in the others. Can PassPapers target the weak areas?

That is what the platform is built around. Results are broken down by subject, topic and question type, so instead of "weak at maths" you see exactly which areas are costing marks.

From there the revision tool builds quizzes aimed at those areas, and the tutorials teach the method behind each question type from scratch. As the weak areas improve, the analytics move with them, so practice keeps following the gap rather than the topics your child already finds easy.

How does PassPapers keep my child motivated?

Consistent practice matters more than cramming, and it only happens if your child wants to do it. So motivation is built into the platform.

Study streaks make consistent practice a habit, and your child is motivated to achieve their best as they progress and succeed, earning unlockable rewards. Learning games build exam skills along the way.

We make learning and improving fun so that it's OC Test prep your child actually wants to do.

Are PassPapers questions the same style as the OC Test ones?

Yes. All questions are written in accordance with the latest OC Test format.

How can PassPapers help my child prepare?

From the first day of your free trial, your child is able to start learning different concepts and methods to tackle the huge range of OC Test questions.
After they have established foundations on a certain topic, they will be able to apply their newly gained knowledge to attempt similar questions in the practice component of PassPapers. Once mastered, they can attempt Trial Exams under time pressure, which simulates the official OC Test. The combination of these components will ensure your child is confident in an exam environment and all the areas of the Opportunity Class Placement Test.

Can my child use PassPapers at home whenever they want?

Yes. PassPapers is online and available any time on any device, so your child can practise when it suits your family, at their own pace. Nothing is locked to a timetable.

Do you offer 1-on-1 tutoring as well as the platform?

Not for the OC Test at the moment. The OC platform is self-paced, with a worked explanation on every question and an AI tutor for the moment your child is stuck.

We do offer 1-on-1 tutoring for the Selective Test, which you can see on our Selective Test tutoring page.

Can we try PassPapers before paying?

Yes. Every account starts with a 7-day free trial. You pick a plan and add a card, but you pay nothing today.

From day one your child gets the diagnostic quiz, the starter question set and mock exams, full grades analytics, the AI tutor, and your chosen plan's features for the whole week. If PassPapers does not fit the way your child learns, cancel before the trial ends and you are not charged.

Is it cheaper to pay for a longer period?

Yes. The plan can be billed weekly, monthly, quarterly or every six months, and the longer the period, the lower the weekly rate works out. The features are identical across all four, so you are only choosing how often you want to be billed, not what your child gets. The pricing table above shows the weekly rate for each option.

Is the payment system on PassPapers secure?

Yes, our payment system is powered by Stripe which has been audited and certified as a PCI compliant service provider. PassPapers will not know your credit card details.

What if I am unsatisfied with PassPapers?

We at PassPapers strive to provide the best services possible by catering for your needs, however, if you are still unsatisfied we will provide you with a full refund.

If I need any help, how do I contact PassPapers?

You can send an email to support@passpapers.com.au, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

If I subscribe to the monthly course, will I be charged automatically every month? How can I cancel the subscription to avoid future charges?

Yes, a subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period. However, you can cancel at any time to avoid future charges, including during your 7-day free trial, which costs you nothing if you cancel before it ends.

If you only plan to use the platform for one period, you can cancel immediately after signing up and still keep access until the end of that period. To cancel, go to the store in your dashboard, where you originally set up the plan, and follow the cancellation instructions.
