Same Hours, Different Results: Why Some Selective Practice Works and Some Doesn't

Two children give up the same number of Saturday mornings. Same months, same effort, roughly the same starting point. One moves several marks and the other finishes the year where they began. The difference is almost never effort or ability. It's that one child's practice closes a loop and the other's runs in a straight line.

What an open loop looks like

An open loop is easy to spot once you know the shape, because most home preparation has it. A session happens. Questions get done, answers get marked, a score gets counted. And then nothing downstream of that session changes because of it.

Next Saturday is chosen the same way this Saturday was: by whatever comes next in the book. Wrong answers aren't carried forward. The score is recorded, or just noticed, and the week resets.

An open loop can run for a full year. It will feel like preparation the entire time.

That's what makes it dangerous. Open-loop practice isn't idle. It consumes real weekends, real money and real goodwill from a child who'd rather be doing something else. It just doesn't compound, and you can't tell by counting hours.

A loop closes when a session changes the next one

That's the whole definition. Practice is closed-loop if what happened on Saturday determines what happens on Wednesday. If it doesn't, the loop is open, however good the questions were.

This isn't new. Feedback research spent two decades arriving at the same three questions.

Effective feedback answers three questions: Where am I going? How am I going? And where to next? Feedback is among the most powerful influences on achievement, but its impact can be positive or negative depending on the kind that is given.

Almost all Selective preparation answers the middle question: a score tells your child how they're going. The first is answered by the test itself. It's the third, where to next, that decides whether the hour compounds, and it's the one almost nothing in a normal week supplies.

Assessment that actually changes what is taught next produces gains of 0.4 to 0.7 standard deviations, larger than most known educational interventions, and helps the weakest students most.

Researchers call this formative assessment: its entire purpose is to change what happens next. Assessment that changes nothing afterwards isn't formative. It's just a measurement your child gave up a Saturday to produce.

The four places the loop breaks

It's more useful to know where your own loop is broken than to read a list of what good practice looks like. There are four breaks, each with a recognisable signature.

1. It breaks at the mark

The session ends when the score is known. Nothing is looked at afterwards, so the only output of two hours is a number.

Signature: you can tell me what your child scored but not one question they got wrong. This is the most common break and the cheapest to fix, because the material is already in the house.

2. It breaks at the diagnosis

Wrong answers get looked at, but only as individual questions. Nobody works out what they have in common, so the pattern underneath never surfaces.

Signature: you know your child is losing marks in Reading, but not whether it's inference, vocabulary in context, or the last four questions of every section. A section is too coarse to aim at.

3. It breaks at the method

The pattern is known and nobody can teach the fix. The gap is identified and sits there, because spotting a weakness and correcting it are different jobs.

Signature: you've known for a month your child struggles with a particular question type, and nothing has changed. Writing is where this break hits hardest, since it's the section a parent can least mark at home.

4. It breaks at the return

The method gets taught, everyone moves on, and the question never comes back. There's no way to know whether the fix held, and usually it didn't.

Signature: the same weakness reappears in a mock two months later and surprises everyone. Understanding something once isn't the same as doing it under time pressure in August.

Worth being honest about

Most families have three of these four breaks open at once. That's not a failure of parenting. Each one needs something a folder of past papers can't supply.

Why this is genuinely hard to do at home

Not because parents aren't trying. Usually the opposite: families doing the most are often the most frustrated, because each break needs a different missing thing.

  • Closing the mark break needs a full worked method for every question, available the moment the session ends.
  • Closing the diagnosis break needs accuracy tracked by question type across months, not by section on one paper.
  • Closing the method break needs someone who can teach the fix, including for writing, against the actual marking criteria.
  • Closing the return break needs something that remembers which questions to bring back, and when, without anyone tracking it.

Those four are the entire job of a very good tutor. They're also what decides whether a year of Saturdays compounds or evaporates.

The loop has to point at the right test

One thing undoes all of it. A closed loop aimed at the wrong format trains your child, efficiently, for an exam they're not going to sit.

Since 2025 the NSW Selective Test has been fully computer-based: sat at a test centre on a laptop, across four timed sections, writing response typed. Preparation that happens entirely on paper is a closed loop pointed at a test that no longer exists.

In the first year Massachusetts ran its state test online, students who sat it on a computer performed as though they had roughly five months less schooling in maths and as much as eleven months less in English, compared with students sitting the identical test on paper. By the second year, once the format was familiar, the penalty had fallen to about a third of its size in maths and about half in English.

The encouraging half: the format penalty isn't fixed. It disappears with exposure, making it the cheapest marks available to any family before test day.

What a closed loop looks like in a real week

Put the four breaks back together and a week stops being a pile of papers and starts being a circuit.

A realistic week, not an ideal one

  • Three or four short sessions rather than one long weekend block
  • Every session on a screen, in the format of the real test
  • Most questions aimed at something last week identified, not chosen at random
  • Every wrong answer explained before the session closes
  • One full timed section a week, building towards full mocks
  • Last week's mistakes reappearing this week, without anyone organising it

It's not more than most families already do. It's often less. The difference is that each part is caused by the part before it.

Closing it does not take more hours. It takes the hours already being spent knowing about each other.
