Your Child's Selective Score Stopped Moving. Here's Why.

The same number keeps coming back. Sixty-something, week after week, through a term of steady work. Most families read a flat score as one thing, not enough effort, and respond one way: more hours. But a flat score has two different causes. They look identical on the page, and the fix for one makes the other worse.
A flat score is not a ceiling
Before separating the two, let's deal with the fear underneath: that the number has stopped because your child has hit their ceiling. That's the least likely explanation.
What can be observed and measured during training is performance, which is an unreliable index of learning. Learning can occur with no discernible change in performance, and short-term performance and long-term learning can be inversely related.
A practice score is a snapshot: one morning, one set of conditions, one set of questions. Real learning can build underneath it for weeks without moving it. The useful question isn't whether your child has stopped improving. It's what's stopping the improvement from reaching the score.
Both plateaus produce the same flat line. Only one of them is fixed by working harder.
Plateau one: your child cannot yet do it
This is the plateau parents assume they have. Marks are lost on question types your child hasn't learned to handle. The method is missing, so no amount of repeating the question supplies it.
What it looks like:
- The same question types are wrong week after week, in the same way each time.
- Your child gets them wrong untimed too, so pressure isn't the variable.
- They can often tell you they find that type hard. This plateau is visible from the inside.
- The wrong answers cluster by topic rather than by where the question sat in the section.
This one responds to teaching. Not more questions of the same type, which just rehearse the gap, but being shown the method and made to use it. Extra hours help here, if they're aimed at something specific.
Plateau two: your child can do it and cannot show it
This is the plateau families almost never diagnose, because from outside it looks exactly the same. Your child knows the content. What they can't do is produce it inside a timed section, on a screen, on the one morning it counts.
What it looks like:
- Accuracy is noticeably higher untimed than timed on the same material.
- Errors climb through a section rather than clustering on a topic, and the last few questions are rushed or unattempted.
- Careless mistakes appear on questions your child can plainly do.
- Your child is often baffled by their own result, because they knew how to do it.
There's a counterintuitive finding here, and it affects the strongest candidates most.
Pressure harms performance by consuming the working memory that skill execution relies on. The effect appears only in individuals with high working memory, because they are the ones whose usual approach depends on having it free.
Put plainly: children who normally think their way through hard questions have the most to lose when the clock takes that capacity away. A bright child sitting flat at 65 per cent under timed conditions is one of the most common versions of this, and it's routinely mistaken for a knowledge problem.
Why the fixes are opposite
- A knowledge plateau needs the pressure taken off: work untimed, slow down, learn the method properly, then reintroduce the clock.
- A performance plateau needs the pressure kept on: your child already knows the content, and every extra hour re-covering it is an hour not spent building what's actually missing.
So the standard response to a flat score, more content practice, is right half the time and counterproductive the other half. It adds fatigue to a child whose problem was never knowledge, and delays the exposure that would have fixed it.
The most common mistake
Treating a performance plateau with more content. The child already knows it, so the hours produce nothing, and the flat score becomes proof they should work even harder.
How to tell which one you are looking at
You can run a rough version of this at home in one session. It's worth doing before changing anything about the week.
A twenty-minute diagnostic
- Take a question type that has been costing marks and give your child ten of them untimed
- Give them ten more of the same type with a real clock on
- Compare the two accuracies, not the two scores
- Note where in the timed set the errors fell: start or end
- On each wrong answer, ask whether they knew how to do it
A big gap between untimed and timed accuracy is a performance plateau. Similar accuracy in both, both low, is a knowledge plateau. Most children have some of each, so the mix matters more than the label.
Both diagnoses need something a mark cannot give you
The home version tells you roughly which plateau you're in. What it can't tell you is which specific question types, in which section, and whether the picture is changing. A mark out of forty averages all of that away, and a plateau is exactly where the average hides the answer.

Final thought
A flat run of scores feels like a verdict on your child's effort. It almost never is.
When your child gets one of these questions wrong, is it because they could not do it, or because they ran out of time to?
If you can't answer that confidently, the plateau isn't the problem. The diagnosis is. Every week spent adding hours before answering it is a week aimed at whichever cause you happened to guess.
